Share WiFi
Timeframe: 2 months
Role: UX/UI design, eng hand-off
Impact: 445k weekly engagements every week, most used featured in the WiFi tab of the Xfinity app
The problem I was tasked to solve was that WiFi credentials were pretty hidden in the Xfinity app. Research into the app strategy IA revealed that users had a hard time finding their WiFi name and password to connect to WiFi. There was also no easy way for users to share WiFi credentials with guests. I created a feature that helps users connect to WiFi by scanning a QR code and send credentials via texting or messaging apps. As of Oct 2023, Share WiFi has 445k weekly engagements every week and has consistently maintained its position as the predominant feature within the WiFi tab.
Previously, users had to go into the Connect tab and tap on their WiFi name to get to the Network entity to find their WiFi credentials that were simply a string of text. There was no way to share or easily connect to WiFi.
In the new Share WiFi feature, I decided to leverage the new partial sheet modal pattern we just built since getting access to oneโs WiFi credentials should be a quick action.
I added a QR code so users can automatically connect to a WiFi network by scanning it on their phone or tablet. I also added a share functionality that opened up an OS modal where users can send their WiFi name and password to a contact via their texting app or other social media apps.
We created 2 versions of the cardโone for the holiday season (on the right) and one normal version. In order to best vet the usefulness of the feature, we decided with the product team that the first place to launch to feature would be on the Overview tab of the app where users would first go when they open the app. Users would see it on their homepage easily and we built in logic to track user data. Data shows that this is currently the second most used WiFi management feature in the app with over 30k users per week.
Working with engineering, we were able to build and release the Share WiFi card in two weeks. We built the card using all reusable elements the engineering team had built for the web to native migration, and it was a great example of how UX and engineering should be working together to build.
Building and testing the feature
Finding Share WiFi a home
Since data has shown that the Share WiFi feature has a lot of engagement and is useful to users, we decided to find Share WiFi a more permanent home in the Connect space. This space will be a logical home for the feature where users can quickly see the state of their Internet and access their credentials.
On the left, you can see a near-term state of the Connect tab weโre building with quick actions that house our Share WiFi feature. In the future, we are planning on evolving this modal to be more of a WiFi details sheet that houses actions like editing WiFi credentials and settings.
